All pets, especially cats, can become dehydrated for a few simple reasons. Cats are famous for being very picky about most everything in their lives. Most experienced cat owners tell stories about a cat that would rather stave than eat something they hate. When it comes to a cats water supply, they have strong likes and dislikes. Study after study has shown that cats prefer water that is at 61F because that is the temperature of natural spring water. Additional studies have shown that cats dislike water that has an odor such as chlorine. Plastics are porous and therefore retain the smell of chlorine or other chemicals used to clean the bowl as well as chemicals in room air such as fire retardants required to be in rugs and furniture.
